Important Message from the Superintendent

Dear SHRSD Families,

As we close out the current school year and begin preparing for the 2026-2027 school year, I wanted to share some important information regarding student technology use and internet-enabled devices.

We recognize that there is a growing body of research examining the impact of screen time on children and adolescents, including its effects on attention, learning, sleep, social development, and overall well-being. At the same time, technology remains an important tool that can enhance teaching and learning when used purposefully and appropriately.

At South Hunterdon, we believe in maintaining a healthy balance between the thoughtful use of technology and the human interactions that are essential to student growth and development. Technology should support learning, not replace meaningful engagement with teachers, classmates, and the world around us.

As many of you know, New Jersey recently passed a law requiring school districts to adopt policies regarding student use of internet-enabled devices. This law takes effect beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. To help families better understand what these changes mean for our students, we have developed a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. We encourage you to review the FAQ with your child, as it addresses many of the questions families may have.

In addition to implementing the requirements of the new law, the district will be taking the following proactive steps designed to promote responsible technology use and support student well-being:

• Current 5th and 6th grade students will not take their district-issued Chromebooks home over the summer.

• Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, students in grades 5 and 6 will not take their Chromebooks home on a daily basis. Devices will be stored in classroom charging carts and used during the school day when needed for instructional purposes.

• For students in grades 7 and 8, district-issued Chromebooks will automatically be disabled each evening at 9:30 p.m. This measure is intended to reduce unnecessary screen time and help ensure students are getting adequate sleep.

These changes reflect our commitment to creating learning environments that leverage technology when it adds value while also encouraging healthy habits, personal interactions, and student wellness.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Sincerely,

Anthony Suozzo
